Mason St, Hawthorn

Originally built in 1890, this Hawthorn brick Victorian home has been renovated in recent years to create a superb family home that is both highly functional and incredibly stylish, thanks to the talent and flair of its owner, who is an interior designer and also the founder of Hawthorn interiors and homewares store, Frey.

The original rooms at the front of the house still showcase their impressive Victorian features, including elaborate architraves, ornate ceiling roses, high skirting boards and a beautiful double-arched hallway, up-lit with floor lighting. A warm neutral interior paint colour complements the eco timber floorboards. Feature lighting throughout the home is courtesy of Frey.

On the left of the hallway is a generously-proportioned living room, separated from the adjacent dining room by a central gas fireplace. Both rooms are impeccably styled with bespoke items from Frey, ranging from stunning tribal artwork to intricate table displays that celebrate the art of global craftsmanship. Embellished handcrafted crosses by Jai Vasicek and vibrant Indigenous artwork inject colour into the space.

On your right is a chic hotel-quality master bedroom suite, featuring silk sheer curtains, a beautiful upholstered bedhead and a classic monochromatic colour scheme.

The luxurious ensuite and walk-in robe are bathed in natural light, thanks to the dramatic sky-light above. Mushroom Caesarstone and timber veneer cabinetry continue the sense of warmth that is present throughout this inviting home.

Liveability and practicality were key requirements for this busy family of five, as is evident from the walk-through garage access. Convenient inbuilt shelving provides handy access to school bags and sports bags.

The downstairs powder room is the epitome of unrestrained luxury, with lavish snakeskin wallpaper from Zoffany and a striking collection of detailed pendant lighting positioned over the vanity.

On your left, sliding cavity doors reveal a highly functional study with extensive built-in cabinetry.

And on the right, an attractive glass balustrade leads to the upstairs level, where a separate children's living area offers prized city views. The eye-catching world map wall-covering was sourced from Grafico.

Further on, you'll find a practical children's bathroom complete with laundry chute, plus three bedrooms, all with built-in desks and cabinetry. Further functionality is provided in the bedrooms by concealed automated roller blinds and automated external louvres.

Returning downstairs, you'll discover one of the most striking interior design elements in this home: the glamorous Slim Aarons 'Hotel du Cap Eden-Roc' wallpaper, perfectly positioned for jaw-dropping effect as you enter the rear open-plan living/dining/kitchen area.

The informal living space exudes comfort and relaxation, with an inviting L-shaped sofa and an inbuilt gas fireplace, framed with carefully selected feature stone from Beyond Tiles. A distinctive B&B Italia dining table and Philippe Starck masters chairs, both from Space, complete the look.

In keeping with the rest of the house, this high-end kitchen is a perfect blend of style and practicality. Its clever design features include a concealed galley-style pantry, pale timber veneer cabinetry, resilient KStone quartz benchtops and attractive concrete pendant lighting from Space. Vibrant artwork by Kerry Armstrong hangs at the end of the kitchen bench.

Externally, the same feature stone from Beyond Tiles has been used to stunning effect on the rear façade, in conjunction with expansive glass sliding doors with dark timber frames.

The garden is a private oasis, with a resort-like pool and pool-house as the main attractions. On the pool wall, a gorgeous wave-like textured tile imported from the United States creates a fabulous effect, which is further highlighted by the waterfall feature. Lush gardenias and hydrangeas frame the pool fence, and a tall leafy tree (planted as a seedling by the previous owners) provides shade for the sun-drenched north-facing garden.
