A Symphony of Heritage and Modern Living
Affectionately known as Fairview, this 1920 Federation residence is a home that still sings. Once the campus of the Australian Guild of Music, its rooms echoed with performance and pedagogy for decades. Today, it has been meticulously restored and reimagined as a refined family home, honouring its musical past while embracing contemporary living.
The beautifully restored Federation façade, crisp and timeless in its current palette, is complemented by black and white chequered porch tiles — a subtle nod to piano keys and the home’s rich musical lineage. Inside, herringbone timber floors, ornate cornices and restored fireplaces celebrate its 1920 origins.
Beyond a dramatic black archway, six former rooms, including a small performance amphitheatre, have been transformed into a cinematic open plan living, dining and kitchen zone. A striking atrium with a central Japanese maple draws light deep into the home, shifting beautifully throughout the day. Italian Carrara marble defines the sculptural kitchen island, while travertine textures and custom detailing add warmth and depth.
A sunken bluestone courtyard opens like a private amphitheatre, and generous insulation and glazing create remarkable quiet, a poetic counterpoint to the home’s life in sound.
Built in 1920 and thoughtfully renewed, Fairview is a harmonious dialogue between heritage and modernity in the heart of Kooyong.
