Layers of Landscape,

History and Heart

Lexington was chosen for Open Houses 2026 not only for its architectural presence and remarkable gardens, but for the generosity of its custodians. When another property withdrew at short notice, they opened their gates without hesitation - a gesture that reflects the very spirit of heritage, community and shared experience. To walk here is to step into a living story, where past and present sit comfortably side by side.

This elegant Italianate residence, designed in c.1878 by John Beswicke, stands within one of Hawthorn’s most distinguished historic streets. From sweeping lawns to shaded verandahs and richly detailed interiors, it captures the optimism and refinement of Melbourne’s “Marvellous Melbourne” era. Thoughtfully maintained and sensitively updated, the home balances historic character with modern comfort.

The gardens are equally compelling - expansive, layered and immersive. Mature trees planted at the time of the home’s construction create a sense of permanence, while later landscape additions introduce texture and seasonal change. Influences reminiscent of William Guilfoyle can be felt in the sweeping lawns and sculptural planting, offering a landscape that feels both grand and deeply personal. It is a place to wander, pause and reflect - and above all, to be shared.
